ISSS – 03rd October – SINGAPORE

Dear Colleagues

Top speakers will not shy away from tackling big issues at the forthcoming ISSS.

Leaders of global shipowning and shipmanagement companies are looking to use the International Shipowning and Shipmanagement Summit to ask very pertinent questions about who is really in charge of your ship and whether the relationship between the office and the ship is as strong as it should be.

While issues such as whether owners and managers should start screening their crew to find out more about their political views may be seen as an infringement of personal space, there are some in the industry who believe employers need to really get to know their crew and get to know what drives and motivates them.

The last session of the day will see major players in the market also tackle the elephant in the room which is the potential disconnect between senior executives at the top of large shipowning and shipmanaging companies and the superintendents actually managing the ships.

Key players including Lars Modin, Marine Operations Director – Asia Pacific, V.Ships; Hanus Mikkelsen, Chief Strategic Crewing Officer, Thome Shipmanagement and Capt Kuba Szymanski, Secretary General of InterManager will share their views on this controversial subject. Register now!

………………………………..

InterManager notes the comments made by the NI and would like to support the notion that the industry needs a clear agreement on what S-Mode is as soon as possible.

Shipmanagers are facing a challenge / crisis when it comes to training and familiarising crews on the vast range of navigation and other on-board systems including ECDIS/Radar/ Ballast Water. For years InterManager has advocated a greater use of standardisation and yet for years these systems continue to become more complex. It is all too easy to blame mariners when they get something wrong, but InterManager believes that the root cause of many incidents is in the over complexity of system design.

While recognising the inherit value of Human Centred Design (HCD) InterManager needs to stress the critical need to establish more prescriptive standardisation (S-Mode) in the short term for the reasons of safety.

Therefore InterManager supports the NI comments and will work with all stakeholders to help progress the development of S-Mode within the IMO eNavigation agenda for the benefit of our seafarers and the environment.
