Dispatches No. 226

Dear Fellow Members and Friends:

As we bring 2014 to a close, I share this message to summarize what InterManager achieved this past year, to thank you for your support of the association and to seek and encourage your active efforts as we welcome 2015.

Looking ahead, 2015 will undoubtedly continue to present “interesting times” for us.   I am confident, however, in our ability to effectively adapt to an ever-changing seascape that will spell the difference in our future success, both as an association and as individual member companies.  We serve an industry that is the backbone of global trade.  Our responsibilities are, therefore, significant and not something we take lightly.

THE PAST 12 MONTHS

You will be happy to note that over the past 12 months, membership has grown by eight percent – continuing the trend of recent years.  InterManager members now manage more than 5,250 vessels and over 250,000 crew members worldwide.  Needless to say, there are many more managers out there that we should actively seek to invite into our ranks.  Promoting such a membership drive will further position InterManager as the strong voice for the shipmanagement sector.   In this age of international legislation and with the increasing requirements for monitoring and reporting within our industry, it is important to ensure that ship and crew managers have such a voice on the world stage and I am determined that InterManager will be able to provide that loud voice.  This will not be an easy task, but achieving such an objective will indeed be possible with your sustained commitment in the period ahead.

INITIATIVES ON THE HUMAN SIDE OF SHIPPING

While we view our crewmembers as our greatest asset, they also represent one of our largest cost elements.  It is critically important, then, that InterManager maintain its active support for initiatives which endeavour to enhance our people’s skills and competencies, driving for enhanced efficiency and productivity in output while working to improve working conditions on board.   Our Shipping KPI project, for example, which was developed to help provide an industry wide benchmark standard, is now a standalone initiative and on the way to being further commercialized independently.  It now has more than 3,577 ships providing information to its database with 415 companies participating.  This represents a doubling on the previous year’s figures.

On other matters involving the human side of shipping, which include both technical and legal aspects, we will continue our presence at the IMO and share developments with the membership, while also maintaining an active role in discussing international legislative matters on behalf of the shipmanagement sector.  InterManager will pursue its projects with partner organisations and member companies; an example is progressing research on the Martha Project which addresses concerns on seafarer fatigue.

No doubt a lot of work remains ahead.  I cannot stress enough how important your active involvement and continued support of the association will be in the year ahead.  All intended to make our association better, more visible and more effective.

Spearheading the numerous initiatives has been and will continue to be our Secretary General, Kuba Szymanski, whom I would also like to thank for the yeoman’s job that has kept InterManager moving forward.

WELCOMING 2015

Tonight, however, we take a few moments to celebrate yet another annual transition.  Here is wishing each of you and your families an abundance of  blessings for the coming New Year.

Enjoy the festivities, and if you are traveling, keep safe.  A toast to 2015.

Kind regards,

Gerardo A. Borromeo

President of InterManager
