Dispatches No. 204

We are half way through our fundraising effort for 24 peaks – with 3 days to go

InterManager is pleased to have raised nearly half the sponsorship needed to enter two teams in this year’s Seafarers-UK 24 Peaks Challenge next month – but more is needed to meet the £4,000 target.

Funds have been boosted this week by a generous $2,000 donation from the Survey Association which has been added to support from Brightwell Payments, ITIC, Seagull, Videotel, the The Isle of Man Ship Registry and a personal donation from ‘Peter H’.

Organised by Seafarers-UK, the annual 24 Peaks Challenge – walking up 24 rugged peaks in the Lake District in just 24 hours – takes place on July 12-13 and the teams must raise a minimum of £4,000.

ISLE OF MAN SHIP REGISTRY CHARITY GOLF EVENT 2014

Following last year’s successful day which raised over £1,800 for the King George V Fund for Sailors, the event will be repeated this year on Friday 29 August, in association with the Isle of Man Shipping Association.  InterManager has entered a team which comprises  four members with the highest 2 scores at each hole to count in a Stableford format.  The team captain, Paddy McKnight is seeking 3 other golfers to join him in making up the InterManager team for this Charity event.  Tee-off at Rowany will be at 1330, (no doubt a shot-gun start) followed afterwards by a hot buffet, raffle and presentations in the clubhouse.  The leisurely afternoon tee-off time will enable participants to arrive in the IOM in the morning, and if so desired, fly out in the evening.

It would be  good for InterManager to put up a strong showing and volunteers to join the team should contact the S-G, Kuba or Paddy.  Meanwhile, happy golfing.

Special discount on new Shipping book

Shipping: An Introduction to the Technical, Operational and Commercial Aspects is a comprehensive and well-planned book which is easy to read and highly accessible both to newcomers to shipping and to those needing to refresh their knowledge and understanding of this highly dynamic and global industry.
The book covers the essentials of shipping, taking the reader through manning, safety, training, navigation and communications. It covers classification and insurance, international conventions and maritime law, and it looks at ports, workboats, cranes and dry docks, as well as pilots and agents.
Author Nigel Draffin, has been involved in shipping for almost 50 years and with the commercial bunker market for over 25 years. He is a founder member of the International Bunker Industry Association (IBIA) and has served several times on its council of management and executive board and has served as Chairman.

In Shipping, Mr Draffin discusses charter parties and contracts of affreightment, shipbroking and vessel vetting, and the main costs, such as manning, maintenance, insurance and bunkering. He covers sale and purchase, new building and scrapping, as well as ownership structures, mortgages, and public and private ownership issues. Not forgotten are the engines and the propellers, speed and efficiency, emissions regulation and pollution.

The book also provides a handy ‘where to go for help’ section, a glossary of abbreviations and shipping terms, as well as informative appendices illustrating vessel type dimensions and what might be found in voyage and time charter contracts.

Published in May, the book retails at £75 per copy but InterManager members can take advantage of a special 15% discount by inputting the special code INTER15 when ordering online at: http://www.petrospot.com/petrospot-books/product/118-an-introduction-to-shipping
