Piracy movie out in the autumn

Shipping is about to hit the limelight with Tom Hanks being tipped to pick up a third academy award for his performance in forthcoming Somali pirate drama ‘Captain Phillips’.

It may be early days but the actor, who has also won Oscar statuettes for Philadelphia and Forrest Gump, seems almost certain to be in the mix come January when the nominations are revealed.

Hanks takes on the role of Captain Richard Phillips in the true story of the 2009 hijacking of the US-flagged 1,068-teu Maersk Alabama(built 1998), the first American cargo ship to be hijacked in two hundred years.

The film is helmed by British director Paul Greengrass who took charge of the second and third instalments in the Bourne trilogy of action movies.

And if the trailers are anything to go by, Captain Phillips could be every bit as tense and exciting.

The movie will premier at the New York film festival and open this year’s BFI London film festival before going on general worldwide release in October.
