MY COMMENT:
An attack in which an “extensive exchange of gunfire” took place yet resulted in no injuries to either side bears some thinking about. Apparently the pirate sprung from the prison was an investor.
Somalia Report By JD 02/21/2012
A group of pirate attacked the central police station in north Galkayo on Monday night, armed with an assortment of weapons including AK47s and PKM light machine guns. Officials from the semi-autonomous region of Puntland and witnesses told Somalia Report that pirates released one of their colleagues from the station after they had overwhelmed the defending police officers.
After an extensive exchange of gunfire, the pirates entered the police station and released one pirate, who had been arrested earlier in the day by Puntland authorities.
“The pirates were very well armed. They exchanged gunfire with police officers but there were no casualties caused by this incident,” Shiil Mohamoud Farah, an officer at the central police station told Somalia Report. \"Our men were not ready for this attack.\"
At around 9:00pm (1800 GMT) pirates began shooting into the air in order to scare off civilians in the area, before launching their attack.
The Attackers
The group of pirates who attacked the police station are based in Galkayo and Harardhere, mostly hailing from the Omar Mohamoud clan (a sub-clan of the Marjeten) but also from the Sa’ad clan (sub-clan of Habir Gedir).
Although Puntland police were not willing to reveal to Somalia Report the name of the pirate freed in the attack, according to pirate sources the released prisoner was an investor.
Pirate sources added that the attackers headed for the Harardhere area following the assault.
Mohamed Yusuf Jama, governor of Mudug region (in which Galkayo is located), told Somalia Report that his administration will continue its operations against pirates and will take caution against future pirate attacks.
Insecurity in Galkayo has increased in recent years, with roadside bombs, clan fighting, and assassinations all on the rise.
