Dispatches No. 301

Dear members

Captain Abhilash Narain Mehrotra, January 29, 1956 – July 22, 2016

With profound grief and sorrow we inform you of the sad and sudden demise of our beloved Captain Abhilash Mehrotra.

He is survived by his wife Anuradha, daughters Ila and Nandini. Captain Abhilash Mehrota was best known to most people as “Captain Abu”, or “Abu”.

He spent 25 years at sea before coming ashore, and spent most of his last 16 years, as a Director of NewsLink.

Abu was responsible for many innovations that led to NewsLink’s popularity with seafarers. Abu was dedicated to making a positive difference in the lives of all seafarers.

His wide ranging professional accomplishments are substantial and internationally acknowledged, but Abu will best be remembered as a very kind, generous and gentle person.

His smile filled the room. His positive attitude, backed-up by his numerous personal and professional achievements, and his willingness to help everyone he met, was a lesson and inspiration to all.

He was always much more comfortable talking about the accomplishments of his beloved “Batch mates”, who were his “Brotherhood”, than about his own accomplishments.

He was a proud member and avid supporter of The Nautical Institute and The Company of Master Mariners of India.

Abu’s humility was equaled only by the love he had for his family. Nothing excited Abu more that to talk about how proud he was of daughters, wife, and siblings, and their successes. Abu led by example, always putting 110% into everything he did.

He inspired us by the very high standards and positive attitude that he lived his life by, “every day”. We will be forever grateful to Abu for how he led us in so many situations and how he shared so much of himself.

Abu’s legacy will be that he always treated everyone he met with warmth, sincere respect, and a smile. We will never forget Abu or his smile.
