SOS SaveOurSeafarers update:

The Twitter feed on the SOS website is kept updated and the news feed is updated if something is relevant.

Recent media coverage of Somali piracy has included:
Economist website (http://www.economist.com/blogs/economist-explains/2013/05/economist-explains-11)
BBC News
Daily Telegraph/Guardian (and more) with a German ‘pirate accountant’ story (http://www.guardian.co.uk/world/2013/may/13/german-arrest-somali-pirate-accountant )
BBC ‘Prisoners in Paradise’ story (http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/magazine-22556030 ).

In passing, typing, ‘News Somali Pirates’ into Google delivers 7.1 million references in a quarter of a second – when SOS first started we were delighted to find 20,000.

There were several references to Somali piracy on UK television last week, in all sorts of contexts, ‘Have I Got News for You’ being one, and ‘Graham Norton Show’, was another, both high-profile television slots. Public awareness continues pretty high.

This should continue through the summer until October, when the Tom Hanks factor will reinforce interest significantly as the Captain Phillips film launches. RMS/Rick Blears still exchanging periodic e-mails with Sony. They seem very confident that they will ride the tide of public interest that has been created.

The recent second Government conference has generated further political discussion on Somalia in general.

The SOS ‘holding’ position continues to be to applaud hostage releases and to continue emphasising that ship operators should maintain vigilance (and BMP) despite there being no new hijackings by Somali pirates for a year now.

Lloyd’s Register provides new DVD to promote safe boat transfers
Short film to educate employees about the best ways to minimise risks when working over water
Lloyd’s Register has issued a new short film entitled Safe Boat Transfers to help provide marine surveyors with comprehensive instructions on how to safely transfer between two vessels at sea.
Working over water and, in particular, boat transfers, during which surveyors switch from a transfer vessel to the boat they are surveying, is a very high-risk activity. The film, originally developed for Lloyd’s Register employees, aims to raise awareness about the associated risks and hazards, and to provide instruction for every stage of the transfer.
It is hoped that Safe Boat Transfers will help to significantly reduce the accidents associated with boat transfers.
Receiving your copy:

The DVD can be ordered from the Lloyd’s Register webstore: http://www.webstore.lr.org.
